BRIAN GARAY

Oils

Somewhere between reality and fiction is how I would describe my work. I'm a long-time admirer and close observer of Baroque and nineteenth century European and American artists. Their use of color, strong composition and confident brushwork inspires my own use of traditional techniques. I've taken great advantage of the great art collections Chicago has to offer, and continue to absorb the vast amounts of information we've inherited from painters of the past.

ALEX LISTELLO

Encaustic

Born in the late 1970's I became part of the "Nintendo" generation. In no time at all I was spring loaded into a rapidly technologically changing world. Technology has changed so fast in such a small amount of time if sometimes feels like time itself should be in a straight jacket.  The date is 2016.

In my artwork I strive to convey my inner reality and those thoughts I have trouble expressing with words, as well as to exorcise anger, resentments, anxieties and even celebrations about my experience of being born female.

JASON MICHAEL WEST

Mixed Media

He is intrigued by spirituality, the human condition, history, and science and this is reflected in his art by showing the complexities, juxtapositions, ironies, and beauty in everyday life. A tad macabre, if you will.

MARCI RUBIN

Mixed Media

Inside of sculpture and printmaking, I am investigating a state of transformation, metaphorically and literally through process and materials. By working within a set parameter of alteration, reformation, abstraction and transformation, I am able to question recognizable and subconscious states of being. These questions presented in my work deal with our expectations relative to form and deformity involving the human body, and engage with familiar features of form such as proportion, scale, interior, exterior, texture and color. Because the human form can be both beautiful and grotesque at the same time, using the body as a source for my work directs me to interrogate issues specifically regarding relationships we have with the body.

LINDA HORTON

Photography

I was born a photographer, and blessed to live in a city that provides endless subject matter, and backdrops that are both ever-changing and timeless. When I'm not taking pictures, you can find me walking my crazy dog, writing haiku on public transportation, or whipping up a batch of my legendary brownies....but I'm usually taking pictures.

JESSICA LUCAS

Wood Cut Prints

Does the light go off in the fridge when you close the door? When you were a kid did you check? That's how I feel about the objects I draw and carve in woodcuts. The are things I have played with, just to watch how they move, occupy space, sound. Then I try to translate into a 2D composition. Yes it's the sound of one hand clapping. I like the result. My blocks create images I relate to and and enjoy.

BALA THIAGARAJAN

Mixed Media

Born and brought up in India, I have a passion for colors and patterns inspired by the Indian culture. I create free-hand textured paintings by piping acrylic paints in the style of henna body art on canvas in an attempt to capture the temporary nature of this art onto more enduring surfaces. I paint intuitively and the symmetry of the paintings comes from a meditative practice of organic repetition, with the finished piece full of rhythm and color.
