SONIA KATZ

Mixed Media Collage

In my collage method, I use chance. Having already painted colors and patterns on white Japanese paper, I combine various papers to see which ones I like together. I cut out shapes and also use leftover cutouts from previous works. The combinations I find give me the idea for the point of the collage. I then arrange the pieces on toned watercolor paper. I can rearrange until I'm happy with the composition. Then I glue the cutouts down. Working in the "abstract" which to me means not directly representing anything around me has given me the freedom I need. I can rely on my "gut feeling" about shapes, colors, patterns and arrangement. I can take diverse objects and make them come together in harmony.
